How to Measure Your Dog for a Collar: A Simple Fit Guide

A collar can only look good when it fits comfortably. Before choosing a color or charm set, take a few minutes to measure your dog's neck and compare the result with the size information on the product page.

What you need

Use a soft measuring tape if you have one. If not, wrap a string around the neck, mark where the ends meet, and measure that length with a ruler. Measure where your dog normally wears a collar, rather than at the widest point of the head.

Measure calmly and record the number

  1. Have your dog stand in a relaxed, natural position.
  2. Place the tape around the neck where the collar will sit.
  3. Keep the tape snug enough to follow the neck without pulling tight.
  4. Write down the measurement and compare it with the size range shown for the item you are considering.

If your dog is between listed sizes, use the exact product sizing guidance before ordering. The Signature Base Collar product page and the collar collection are the best places to check the currently available options.

Check the fit after the collar arrives

Once fitted, make sure the collar sits comfortably and does not interfere with normal movement. Recheck the fit as needed, especially for growing dogs or after a grooming appointment. A collar's adjustment range is useful, but it is not a substitute for measuring before you buy.

Choose style after fit

Measuring first makes the styling decision easier. Once you know the base collar size, you can concentrate on color and charms. Use the Build Your Set page to choose a collar base and see available snap-on options, or browse individual charms for a future addition.

A good measurement is a small step that helps turn a collar choice into a considered, everyday part of your dog's wardrobe.
